Originally released in 1977, the LD-1000's dramatically flared heel was created to support long-distance runners. However, it was recalled shortly after due to safety concerns. Phil Knight expected backlash for the recall, but instead he received gratitude from devout runners and loyal customers. The LD-1000 was shelved and took a back seat to stardom for decadesbut it wasn't forgotten.
